Common Shampoo Mistakes

Washing your hair is easy, right? Just "rinse and repeat." It’s actually not that simple. While the act of washing your hair is pretty straightforward, the choices you make, such as the type of products or temperature of the water are in fact important in maintaining your hair. Below, are some washing do’s and don’ts for healthier, shinier hair. Mistake #1: Selecting products based on your hair type. It’s a no-brainer to look for products geared to your hair type – normal, oily, dry or color-treated, but it won’t always give you the best results. For example: fine, dry hair will need different products than coarse, dry hair. Instead match your shampoo to your hair texture—fine, medium or coarse. Fine hair needs a lightweight, protein-rich shampoo to add body. Coarse hair needs moisturizing, smoothing agents to keep it soft, manageable, and frizz-free. The Curls take the ease out of finding the right product prescription that is best for you. At each appointment professional product recommendations, product training and style lessons are provided.  Mistake #2: You cleanse like you text—fast and furiously. If you’re in and out in under 5 minutes, you’re probably not washing your hair thoroughly. Often women don’t take the time to fully wet their hair and let the shampoo lather. Pin-Up Curls is a Eufora Exclusive Salon. Most Eufora shampoos are based with 100% certified organic pharmaceutical grade aloe vera (not water). When using our shampoos, remember just a little bit goes a long way! It’s concentrated which will require you to completely wet your hair. Without enough water, you may be inclined to compensate by using more product (stripping both your hair and your wallet). Try standing under the shower spray for a minute, wet your whole head before starting to wash. Wash twice if you started with very greasy or product-laden hair.

Mistake #3: Applying your shampoo to the same spot on your scalp (usually at the crown). You might notice that the top of your scalp is dry or flaky. Try alternating your routine by starting your shampoo at the nape of your neck and distributing the lather onto your hair before moving toward the top of your head. Mistake #4: You put your shampoo on auto-refill. Hair doesn’t get used to the same shampoo over time. However, the needs of your hair can shift—because of the season, your styling habits, coloring, and other factors. Think of shampoo like a prescription, used for the right purpose at the right time. The same guest can take home a smoothing shampoo in the humid summer months and a volumizing shampoo in the dryer winter months. Or alternate between a brightening purple shampoo, clarify shampoo and moisturizing formulas for a blonde. Before you reach for the same formula you've used since the release of the iPhone 6, consider discussing your needs with your Curl Friend at your next session. Mistake #5: You like a good steam. Piping hot water dries your scalp and hair. We suggest dialing down the temperature for a final rinse. Excessively hot water opens the hair's cuticle layer, exposing more fragile areas. It's very important that you close back down the cuticle after applying conditioner by rinsing with cool or cold water. Mistake #6: You're conditioning in the wrong place.  No shampoo cycle is complete without a conditioner. Conditioner should be applied at the ends first and work up towards the scalp but remember to only apply product on the hair shaft (not the scalp). Another tip is to squeeze out the water in your hair before applying the product. Work your conditioner through with your fingers. For optimal shine, finish up with a hit of cool water.
